March 18, 2007 Sierra at Tahoe - Last Day of the Year for Buddy Werner Joe and all those kids and other parents
Sophie has mastered the Power Wedge. Think it's easy? I'd like to see you ski with your legs spread this far apart all the way down Lower Main. Another great year of Buddy Werner came to an end last Sunday. Actually there's one more week of it for the all stars, but for our cooler than you team of 14, it was all over for us as a team. So I grabbed the camera and made sure I took some pictures of these ripping crazy kids before they outgrew their current pairs of baggy pants. Kelly, Shannon and Clara sported Bowman speed suits for the last race:
Sid, with Coach Yellow Jacket in her goggles:
Liss and Emily, rocking the hoodies:
After a year of close 2nds, Clara finally lands the #1 bib for the final race:
Some of Team #4 at the top of the race course looking VERY focused on the upcoming course:
Stewart girls are all about color coordination:
Brady - visualizing perfect execution of the 4 gate flush:
Joel mentally preparing for the delay just before the finish:
It's very difficult to get Jack to take anything seriously:
James and Leo are dreaming about jibbing. Seriously.
We weren't the only team keeping it loose at the top. Check out these prospects:
I know he hasn't been on my team in several years, but he deserves a spot on this page - Louis "Super Chief" Pepi:
O.K. Clara, it's time to get it started:
And she's off! Picture by Barbara:
Now you Squew:
Another Barbara shot. Thanks Barbara!
They both had great runs, as did No Action Jackson:
You know the snow is hard when 50 kids have skied this course and the groomer tracks are absolutely unchanged. Brady:
Super Sid rips after only her 2nd year of skiing:
Emily put up one of the fastest times of all girls on this day. The longer skis helped:
James. I'm going to miss this kid next year.
Super Kelly - braver than all the boys:
And Shannon. I wish she could be on our All Star Team. It was either us or Soccer, and if you saw her play soccer you'd understand why she picked soccer.
Leo - Rippingest little skier I've seen in a while. All around master of powder, racing and park.
And he just happened to win this big final race of the year on this run right here:
With the race over, it was time to go hit the park. I was happy to take pictures of these kids going big: James jamming a rail:
Here's Leo:
Then he ordered me to go chill next to a big kicker, and get the camera ready.
I had know idea this kid was interested in being a truck driver, in a big way:
And holds it to the end!
James was next, and did not go small:
A not too uncommon sight in the park:
Brady spreads every wing he has, and flies:
Kell, will not be outdone:
Shannon just before impact:
Joel is usually so good about staying out of the back seat....:
Now the BLOCK. Thank god these kids don't know what the real BLOCK of Tahoe is. Leo gets all spinny on this thing:
and off this thing:
Jamestown:
...lands it switch:
Jack will not be left behind. Mad props for the white T-shirt. Cause he'll work on the motorcycle later tonight too:
Joel is made of rubber. I have several vivid memories of this kid that make that an undisputable fact for me:
Just when you thought the race was over, we catch up with Nick (below) and Team #13 destroying the course:
Nick Coolbaugh. Or as Sophie called him when they were both 5 years old - Pock Coo-bah. Just a matter of time before he's in the park in between winning races.
And it's worth a 2nd view. Sophie's POWER WEDGE.
Sophie in the starting gate for run #2:
First year racing at 7 years old. I'm proud to have 3 girls out there racing. Next year we lose the pizza and go to French fries:
Long run for little legs:
Awards Ceremony to finish off the day and year. Sophie was all grins when she took 3rd place in her age group.....as you can tell every kids gets a trophy:
Barbara and the future rippers of Team #13:
Team #13 took home the hardware!
I am proud to say that 5 out of the top 6 girls in ages 9-12 were from our team. Kelly, Emily, Lissie, Lilly (Team #1), Shannon and Clara:
Brady took 1st place for 7-8 boys, and he's an all star:
Then my camera died! So I have no shots of Leo, James, Jack, Joel and all the others. Thanks for a great year kids. Hopefully you'll be back with me again next year.
