.........................................experiences from the Sierra Backcountry

August 25th - September 1st, 2007

Part 2 - Stewart Family Roadie- Nor Cal Coast and Getting Oregonic

Salt water humidity does strange things to my baby's hair - 8/29/07

Day #5 - Shelter Cove, Ca to Brookings, OR

Leaving the Shelter Cove Inn.  We'll be back.

Don't dare leave town without another stop at one of the coolest coffee shops in the world:

But we had to move on, because peculiar things awaited us:

Like little Sophie amongst big Redwoods:

from within the belly of a giant:

On to Eureka where we ate the heartiest food outside the South for lunch.  Lumberjacks now how to put it down:

The Co-op in Arcata was more down Jodi's liking.

The square was cool, we should have stopped.

But beauty awaited us further North.  A meandering road near the mouth of the Klamath River took us to this amazing overlook.

Patiently gazing out at the ocean.  Hoping to see something magnificent in the deep blue drink....

Our patience was awarded as we watched 3 whales feeding near this large rock.  Pictures are blurry, but you can see the whales if you look carefully.  What an awesome sight to behold for these mountain folk!

Happy whale watchers:

Crescent City has that Northern California vibe:

The view in the rear view mirror for countless hours and miles:

Brookings, OR.  Don't let the beauty fool you.  Not as good as it looked.

Day #6 - Brookings to Bandon to Camas Valley to Ashland....OREGON!

Big Bluey at his new coastal home in Bandon, OR:

The view from the front lawn of Mark, Sabra, Luke and Stryder

The boys in their hallway to Narnia:

Nora likes the dunes:

Catching up:

Like the reflection?

Nice color clinging to the sea stacks:

Then we entered the mines of Moria:

Strange things happen within the mines of Moria:

But Gandalf was there to carry the hobbit out of the port towards Rohan, followed closely by Smeagol:

More cool tide pools and discovering:

Then it was time to move on.  Same kids, only bigger.

Next stop was Camas Valley with Aunt Nikki and others.  I spent some time here as a little guy, but hadn't been back in many years.  It was a real pleasure to return.

Cousin Julie with those Camas Valley Colors behind her:

Larry and Ryan:

Artie with a frozen catch..or kill...or both.

They busted out the quads.  We had some fun cruising around the property:

A sad and special place.  My favorite Uncle Hank lies here:

Sophie and Joad enjoying the Oregon country:

Schmidty's trains:

After a great afternoon in Camas Valley we were on to Ashland.  We knew we had arrived when we saw this establishment.  I'd pay $1,000 to get that sign with the wording, "Squew's House".

Day #7 - Ashland, OREGON!

I failed to take the camera on our long walk through the amazing Lithia Park.  But I did take it for Lissie, Clara and I's very cool mountain bike ride down the White Rabbit trail.  Very nice tight dirt compared to Tahoe's Summertime litter box conditions.

And those madrona trees were tre cool:

A beautiful vantage of Ashland.  Such a unique and soulful town.

Does TRPA exist in Ashland!?!

One last paved downhill into town:

Back in the back alleys where the vibe is alive:

Why every town and City does not make an attempt at having a park like this, I'll never know.

Joad and the little girls had fun while we were gone:

Uncle Paul approved:

No more one room vacations...

Day #8 - Ashland to Chico to Tahoe!

The intention behind our detour to Chico was to spend some time with Great Grandpa, aka Wise One.  He is an amazing man who has lived the great American story.  He grew up in the orange groves of rural Southern California, fought the Japs in the Pacific in World War II, landed a homestead and farmed for 50 years in Tulelake, CA, an entrepreneur and much, much more.  He is as sharp witted as ever and a joy to spend time with.

Great Grandma was just as great, and obviously he still thinks so.

Grandpa and I performing the "lumberjack" hand shake:

Followed by the "Milkman":

A Nora hug is nice to get:

Wise One had to make sure we drove an American car:

So Long.

Day #9 - Back in Tahoe:

One of the greatest parts about living in Tahoe is that it's never hard to come home from vacation:

THE.

END.
