.........................................experiences from the Sierra Backcountry |
January 28, 2008 - February 9, 2008 Tahoe gets Nuked Joe and lotsa folks - see below 2008 delivered the best late January / early February skiing I've ever experienced. Tahoe was hammered by a few huge storms in late January and then every other day for over a week it snowed another 1'-2' on top of the mega base. Just enough to hit the reset button and clear out all the old tracks. Low elevation snow put Gardnerville runs from Heavenly at the top of the to do list, but everywhere we went it was epic. In summary, I skied A LOT. I didn't take my camera all that often, but I did grab enough shots to put memories on our faces when we reflect back on these days.... January 28, 2008 - Heavenly Gondola Laps - Josh, Kaptain, Zippy My truck looked like this every morning: And Pioneer Trail was like this: Heavenly pass was invaluable this year: A little hard work leads to good things Kaptain: Like this: A lack of hard work leads to pink things:
February 1, 2008 - More Heavenly Action, with a Gardnerville Finish and a crew of 7 A little snow on the roof. It wasn't as pretty on the inside as it looked on the outside. Steve and I working on our beginner skills.... He's a quick learner, as demonstrated on Firebreak. Then a whole other posse united to drain it down to G-ville at the end of the day: My tracks on the exit of my favorite Porcupine Ridge run. Brian in the vicinity enjoying his favorite Porcupine run: Josh: Ben: Amy: Jake: Len in my personal fave: Josh saw stars after clearing the creek to an uphill landing: Where it ends: The new Kingsbury shuttle service did well during this low elevation snow cycle: February 2, 2008 - More Gardnerville runs and a different crew of 7 Big Bob and Len appreciating their skins: Len, during the first 5' of 4,000'. Big Bob: Crossing that creek again. Through the McMansions and to the waiting trucks: With a cold beer in hand, we head back up to Stagecoach for #2. Coach Mac getting the last bit of effortless vert: Arty makes the deep snow appear shallow! Len and Arty......? How my drive home goes:
February 3, 2008 - Super Bowl Sunday Storm Day at Sierra with the girls Echo Summit: Boom and Squew: Sophie Can you guess which pair is mine and which is Sophie's? That snowboarder does not care... Boom and Squew: Soaph! Squew is a powderhound, that doesn't think twice about ducking a rope for freshies: I took her into Avy Bowl and where rope ducking is not necessary for fresh pow: Then we hooked up with Garrett for one of the funnest sessions of pow skiing I've ever done with kids. And it was just Garrett, Lissie and I. Coach Mac did join us for a run or two: How the addiction to powder begins. Sophie:
February 7, 2008 - Flagpole Morning Glory: Zippy de skinning. He was too fast for me to get any decent shots of him flying down the mountain: Kyle: Toby and Buddy:
February 9, 2008 - Red Lake to Stevens Peak: The snow had finally stopped falling by now. What to do with all that snow....
Our tracks in Crater Bowl: Not quite so untracked on Stevens. The Comma was fun though: Looking down it, where several snowboarders had made trenches s they side slipped. Whew!
