.........................................experiences from the Sierra Backcountry

Summer of 2009 as captured by the camera

The crew of 6 at Lake Powell.

Last day of 7th grade for Lissie and her neon friends:

River fun was had:

A place of serenity and sun:

Kimberly's birthday was spent at Skunk Harbor on the East Shore.

Birthday girl:

Crawdad catchers:

The swimming was awesome:

Sophie:

Squew and her pink goggles:

Benny Boy and me:

I had some fun with the underwater camera - Squew:

Uncle Paul the Orca:

Oddly grotesque pictures of big daddy swimming:

Bubble Clause:

Joad and Rox:

Tahoe is a nice place to spend a summer:

Maia and Sophie spent many days together:

Sophie was in two plays, including Peter Pan w/ Gabby.

and as a gnome in Rumplestiltskin at Valhalla:

Nora and I enjoyed the day at the lake too:

Shelby made her BFF a birthday cake for #15!

I've worn this shirt on all of Clara's birthday's for 15 years.  Including the actual birth day in 1994.

A rainy and stormy summer it was.

Boom and Alexis:

Swimming in the Potholes with the Park family:

Liz and Greg potholin'

The Lake Aloha backpacking trip with Big Daddy, Boom, Squew, Soaph and Roxie was muy bueno:

Don't they look like the twins from The Shining?

I camped and skied here in April of 2008:

all good backpacking trips finish w/ ice cream and snacks (fallen leaf lake general store):

And the Summer closeout vacation was a venture deep into the Southwest desert with Jeff and Thom on his amazing houseboat on Lake Powell. Incredible place and a substantial change of scenery for this Tahoe family.

Happy Joad on the launch at Powell with her new little car.  The tidy little Traverse replaced the big 'ol Excursion.

Camp site for nights #1 and #2 - close to the Marina.  An incredible sandy site.

Jeff style living:

Nora was a tadpole.

Great little cliff jumping right next to our beach front hut:

Boom:

Squew:

And after this shot of Sophie on day #1 my "waterproof" camera took in some water.  After two days of drying in a bag of rice and it was back in action.

So these are shots w/ Clara's camera.

Squew on the wake board near Castle Rock:

Boom too:

Sophie the captain:

Camp site in Reflection Canyon for night #3.  I called it the hanging gardens, the girls called it hell.  The claustrophobia of the steep canyon walls combined with a stormy night had the men pulling anchor the next morning.

Bathing beauties:

The final camp site for the last 3 nights.  Probably 50 miles up river (lake) pas the San Juan and before Llewellyn Canyon.  This site did not suck:

Relaxation and swimming ensued:

Big Daddy went cliff jumping with Jeff further up river.  Not far from Hole in the Wall.

Boom and Squew somewhere between fear and fun.

Sophie, Boom, Liss and Sam-I-Am.

Him's Nordicai:

Jeff skiing up the San Juan arm:

wind sculpted hair:

Big Daddy and the big 3.

Skiing up river in the AM.  This is Bonnie with Rich and Renee photographing.  Jeff is driving.  I skied a bunch on this trip and loved every bit of it.

I'll try to put some shots up from Renee if they are not too embarrassing.

New friends from So Cal - Rich and Bonnie.

We hiked in the desert heat to Rainbow Bridge.

The once per year family photo:

and with Thom:

Big Daddy and Show-T:

One of many killer canyons on Powell.  There is a lifetime of exploring to do up these canyons - both on boat in the water and on foot in the slots.

Big dramatic cliffs.  Pictures just can't do this place justice.

Thom is awesome.

The game of train was played many many times.

Jeff battled Jersey endlessly about tracking sand onto the boat.  Not sure who won.....

Anytime of day was a good time to be on or in the water:

Nora, Thom and Jeff:

Swimming buddies:

Girls making like they are at home:

Vegas girl loved all the trees and shade in the desert:

Captain Squew texting and driving while we motor back towards Whaweep.  I better break this habit now....

Lots of pictures were not taken like Clara's triathlon w/ Shelb and Cass at Donner, or the girls on the boat w/ the Smiths, or Bishop swim meet or many bike rides and beach days.

Now comes fall and then comes winter!

....in fact, less than a month after we returned from Lake Powell and the desert heat, we found this scene on our back deck in Tahoe.

Sophie on October 4th:
